One of the best, most effective habits to include in your health daily routine is going for a walk. The bennies are abound on the topic of one our most simple gifts, 2 legged movement forward. My daily walks connect me in so many ways; it’s hard to sum up quickly. Just know if you work with me as your personal nutritionist nurse, walks are always apart of the recommendations. Functional medicine is all encompassing, mind-body-spirit with nutrition as the foundation.
Of course, as I walk I first become aware of the aches and pains in my hips and legs but I quickly find gratitude that I’m moving along & still making progress as these hips heal, eeking out a few glorious miles outside, every single day. Usually, sunshine greets my walks to power me with solar energy with immune supporting vitamin D and keep pessimistic thoughts at bay. Some walks are filled with music exploration, others podcast learning sessions, or just the sounds of the beach neighborhood we explore. Today’s choice was NPR for an informative interview about France and then some meditation walking to the tiny desk sounds of talented oud player Rahim AlHaj.
For me, the we is another important aspect of walking. When I think about it, any given walk connects me more with my doggie, my husband, my mom (usually under the stars in her country living ‘hood), or anyone who joins me! (I have a MeetUp folks, so if your a beach neighbor come MeetUp, walk, & talk functional medicine). Historically, my running shoes would wear out every couple months from miles of training, but now I burn through my walking shoes. My weight is healthier, my hips are definitely happier, and my overall health has sustained with the simple habit of a daily walk. Movement is life and my pace may have changed but the living is still oh so good. Now get out there and explore the world around you-solo or with a compadre, enjoy the prescription to go walk for your thriving health. And don’t forget to stop and smell the roses.
Some of the interesting publication links I use for my walking bennies knowledge: Stress reduction by mindful meditation techniques to employ for health support from a variety of conditions like blood pressure, diabetes, ulcerative colitis, depression, anxiety, insomnia, smoking cessation, etc, etc, etc, etc. Overall general wellness thrives when the body explores focused movement, i.e. life.
Just go for a walk people and find joy in movement, in the life that surrounds you!
