The Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) states the paradigm of Functional Medicine (FM) as the practice that incorporates an assessment of the entire patient addressing the underlying cause of disease, using a systems oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is a unique field of medicine that includes practitioners from various backgrounds with a common interest of providing better quality care to their patients. FM practitioners consider genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that effect the individual state of health and develop a partnership with the patient to for proactive, personalized medicine. This unique approach to healthcare empowers the patient to take an active role with the practitioner in their own health. It is the way I approach my own health and a paradigm of healthcare I incorporate into my practice.
I am a current member of IFM and regularly attend the annual conferences provided by IFM. I plan to begin working towards IFM certification over the next few years to expand my expertise in the field of FM. To complete the mind, body, spirit approach I plan to expand my knowledge and practice in the near future by pursuing yoga teacher therapy certification and just maybe an advanced nursing practice degree….yes, I love being a student! It’s a genuine trait from my gold star winning Mom, a teacher extraordanaire and life long student herself. She’s pretty amazing.
